Sign language translator provides ‘proxy’ for people

“Kinect and sign language translation” from Microsoft Research begins by stating that there are millions of people around the world using sign language everyday.  Dr. Tim Pan, Dr. Zilin Chen, Dr. Stewart Tansley and Dr. Xin Tong have created an interactive computer to that cross translates between sign language, written language and spoken word in both Mandarin and English.  An avatar is used to represent the person who is signing, as the translator serves as a, “Proxy for the hearing person,” according to Dr. Tansley, who developed the ‘natural user interface’ feature.   This might also be a useful tool in teaching English or Mandarin sign languages.
