“72,000 Ladybugs released in Mall of America” – to eat aphids

Marc Lallanilla reports on the release of “72,000 ladybugs” to prey on aphids that are preying on 30,000 plants and trees inside the mall of America.

Ladybugs, members of the coccinellid family of beetles, which are valued by gardeners for their habit of eating pests like aphids,” Lallanilla explains.

Ladybugs are what I call, sort of a biological defense system,” senior manager of environmental services for the Mall of America is quoted as stating.

The ladybugs have been used before at the Mall, as an, “Alternative to commercial pesticides,” because they, “Make ideal pest control agents inside an enclosed area.”
