Art Candy with James Courtenay James
Saturday, May 11
9:00 am – 4:00pm
Explore painting those challenging materials and textures that can enliven any still-life, landscape or portrait. In this one-day workshop, students will examine techniques and color mixes with oil paints that capture metals, wood, fabrics, rocks, hair, mirrors, glass, water and more. Students are encouraged to bring objects that are of interest to them.
Drawing & Painting Drapery with James Courtenay James
Tuesday evenings, June 4-25
6:00 – 9:00 pm
Learn the universal vocabulary of folds that occur in all fabrics. Students will learn to quickly identify these basic shapes and movements to accurately render clothing or drapery in still-lifes and figurative artworks. Learn techniques for representing various types of fabrics and textile patterns. Students may bring samples of fabric or clothing that they would like to study. Students will work in oils and draw in charcoal. There will be a one hour lunch break. Lunch is on your own.
Oil Painting Boot Camp with James Courtenay James
Saturday, June 29
9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Build foundation skills that can be applied to many painting styles and to realist of abstract subjects. Students will learn how to prepare the canvas, color mixing, brush handling, and painting techniques. No previous experience in oils necessary. There will be a one hour lunch break, Lunch is on your own.
Alla Prima Painting in Oil with James Courtenay James
Wednesdays July 10 – 31
9:00 am – 12 noon
Paint a complete still-life or figurative oil study in each 3 hour session. Using direct painting techniques of alla-prima we will cover composition, block-in, color mixing, establishing hues-values-chroma, defining edge quality, brush techniques and paint application. For figurative sessions, students will be working from a live model. Includes model fee. There will be a one hour lunch break. Lunch is on your own.
Basic Perspective with James Courtenay James
Saturday, July 20
9:00 am – 4:00 pm
This one-day workshop will cover the crucial concepts of 1, 2 and 3 point perspective and their practical application. Exercises will improve your still-lifes, landscapes and figurative paintings and drawings. Learn how to successfully construct difficult forms like ellipses in full perspective. We will also study the use of aerial perspective, edges and color to enhance the appearance of depth in your work. A portion of class time will be spent out of doors drawing surrounding buildings in the urban landscape. There will be a one hour lunch break. Lunch is on your own.
About the instructor:
James Courtenay James headed his graphic design and illustration firm until 2007 when he devoted himself to painting full time. He has exhibited in several juried shows throughout the Southeast, and was the recipient of a MakeWork Grant in 2009 for his portrait series, “Other Faces – Immigrants to Chattanooga”. Realist painting with a narrative element is his current focus. Courtenay is currently represented by River Gallery, Chattanooga and the Lagerquist Gallery in Atlanta.
