This video, based on the book by Juan Gonzalez takes a look at the complex history of Latin American immigration. This is a story that is untold in America. Harvest of Empire includes interviews with Gonzalez, along with Pulitzer Prize winning Cuban immigrant, Fabido Santiago, Nobel Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu and Grammy winning Nicaraguan immigrant Luis Enrique, among many others.
Gonzalez traces the history of immigration from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic into the United States. “America is an immigrant nation,” says Gonzalez. And this film tells the story of what it really is to be an immigrant.
Father Ray Bourgeois recalls his experience of the murder of Bishop Romero in El Salvador and the torture of, “Anyone who was against U.S. policy.” He said, “People don’t immigrate, they flee.”
